Human rights. Nearly 170,000 people remaining in Mariupol are starving, says Human Rights Commissioner Lyudmila Denisova. Russian propaganda says they delivered food for 6000 people, which overall counts nearly 6.5% of the city’s residents. Meanwhile, Russian forces do not allow humanitarian convoys of Ukraine and international organizations to enter the city. During the last evacuation from Mariupol, Russian forces interrogated children, namely to obtain information about their parents, as well as to check whether their parents do not hide any information.
Cities under attack. Shelling of the Donetsk region continues. At least 1 person died and 12 were killed due to the Russian attacks in the region. On the morning of May 12 and on the afternoon of May 13 the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv was shelled with cluster munitions from volley-fire rocket systems. At night, Russian troops fired on the Dnipropetrovsk region from MLRS BM-27. Yesterday evening, Russian forces fired uncontrolled missiles at the Ukraine’s border in the Sumy region. The Head of the Luhansk civil-military administration reports that Russian forces are destroying and damaging 50 buildings in the region daily. .
Mariupol. Russian forces continue bombing the Azovstal steel plant, where the last holdouts from the Ukraine army have sheltered. Former Ukrainian Presidents, Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroshenko appealed to the world community with a request to help evacuate Ukrainian military and civilians from “Azovstal”
Cities under occupation. Russian forces capture civilians in temporarily occupied Popasna, Luhansk region and under the threat, they bring them to the territories that are not under Ukraine’s control. Fierce battles for the city lasted for two months. At present, there are no surviving houses in Popasna, which has been under Russian control since May 8. At the moment of Russian occupation, the city counted one and a half thousand civilians remaining.
The occupiers are looking for people in shelters and under the barrel of a machine gun they are taking Popasnyans to Pervomaisk and Stakhanov, which have been occupied for 8 years. In Kherson region, in Henichesk district, self-proclaimed local authorities have announced the roll-out of the so-called “census”. All remaining citizens should come to the local council for registration.
War crimes. Ukraine has kick-off the first court trial of war crimes committed by a Russian soldier, Sgt. Vadim Shishimarin, who is accused of shooting a 62-year-old civilian in the northeastern Ukrainian region of Sumy in late February. The trial most likely will open the series of the further court trials of the captures Russian soldiers for the crimes committed in Ukraine.
Foreign policy. G7 foreign ministers met in Germany to discuss further aid and weapons support to Ukraine. During the meeting. During the meeting, Josep Borrell, the vice-President of the Commission announced a further 500 million euros worth of military support. The event has been attended by the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and Moldava, as the discussions included also food security concerns and fears of the spillover effects of the war on Moldova. Foreign Minister Kuleba addressed the foreign ministers to seize Russian assets and hand them over to help it rebuild after months of the war.
Sanctions. The UK has introduced a new package of sanctions. The introduced sanctions will hit Putin’s financial network, including his ex-wife and cousins – tightening the vice on the President and his inner circle. The list includes Alina Kabaeva, unofficial partner of putin, her grandmother, Lyudmila Ocheretnaya, former First Lady of the Russian Federation and ex-wife of Putin,as well as Putin’s cousins and business allies. As of today, the UK has now sanctioned more than 1,000 individuals and 100 entities, including oligarchs worth £117 billion
Health security. 570 health care facilities have been destroyed, and 101 hospitals have been completely destroyed іsince the beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine, reports Ombudswoman of Ukraine. Also, around 200 ambulances were seized by Russian authorities. In the Luhansk region, the occupiers are stealing and exporting large stocks of foreign drugs and equipment from hospitals. During the first days of the occupation, medical equipment was dismantled on the territory of the temporarily occupied Kreminna and taken to Russia.
Approximately 10% of the population remained in Severodonetsk, Luhansk region. People live without water, light or gas in the city. There are no safe zones due to constant artillery shelling with an interval of three to four minutes. The maternity hospital in Severodonetsk continues to operate in such difficult conditions.
Culture. Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland joined their efforts to digitize Ukraine’s cultural heritage. For this purpose, the three countries established a special fund to support the digitization of Ukraine’s cultural heritage and are working to create a digital platform for the preservation and promotion of Ukrainian culture.The project “eMuzey” (engl. “there is a Museum” or “E-Museum”) aims to create a single portal of cultural values of the Museum Fund of Ukraine.
