On September 28, the Russian occupation authorities in the partially occupied Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions appealed to the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to consider the issue of joining the captured territories of Ukraine to the Russian Federation. Russian authorities implausibly claimed that each sham referendum received between 87 and 99% approval from Ukrainian residents.

September 27 marked the end of voting in so-called referendums in the four occupied regions of Ukraine. Vladimir Putin could announce the annexation of occupied regions within a few days, the UK’s defence ministry said. Meanwhile,  Kazakhstan, one of Russia’s close ex-Soviet partners, will not recognise the possible annexation of Ukraine’s eastern regions by Russia through referendums held there, Reuters reported.

On September 21, an exchange of Ukrainian prisoners of war took place. As a result of the exchange, Ukraine returned 215 Ukrainian defenders, including 108 soldiers of the ‘Azov’ regiment. 200 of them were exchanged for Viktor Medvedchuk. According to the agreements, until the end of the war, 5 commanders of the Azov regiment will remain in Turkey under Erdogan’s protectorate.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed on Monday that Ukrainian forces have retaken 6000 square km of Russian-occupied territory since the beginning of the month. Clearing of the territories still continues on 4000 square km of the liberated regions. During the last few days, Ukraine recaptured more than 300 settlements in northern Kharkiv Oblast, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said on September 13.
